CHI Director and Professor and Chair of Environmental and Occupational Health, Dr. Susan Anenberg, co-authored a paper published in Nature Sustainability, entitled "Air quality, health and equity implications of electrifying heavy-duty vehicles." Anenberg and other co-authors examined the air quality and health impacts associated with a shift to non-emitting heavy-duty vehicles in the region surrounding Chicago, Illinois, finding that decreases in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) translate to about 590 avoided premature deaths, and increases in ozone (O3) add about 50 premature deaths. Furthermore, the largest simulated health and pollutant reduction benefits are found within communities with higher proportions of Black and Hispanic/Latino residents.
