CHI Director and Associate Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health, Dr. Susan Anenberg, published a paper in Environmental Health, entitled 'Synergistic health effects of air pollution, temperature, and pollen exposure: a systematic review of epidemiological evidence.' This systematic review assessed the epidemiological evidence on the synergistic effects of exposure to air pollution, pollen, and temperature on all-cause mortality and cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality. The authors found: 1) moderate quality and sufficient evidence of synergistic effects of heat and air pollution, 2) low quality and limited evidence of synergistic effects of exposure to both air pollution, pollen, and heat, and air pollution and pollen; and, 3) there was not enough evidence to evaluate the synergistic effects of heat and pollen.
